PIGGY PACKERS – THE STORY.
Back in the late 90’s, driving through Paekakariki, a few old vans started appearing on the side of the road. Piggy Packers was alive!
The first time Rod saw them, his thought was, “Who would ever call a business that??!”
The name was a combination of the Back “Packers” that initially hired them, plus the fact they often came back in a “pig-sty” condition!
A few years later, Piggy Packers moved to a huge site between the highway and railway at Porirua Railway Station. The business changed hands for the first time.
The new owner grew the fleet to 75 vehicles by 2008. A road trip in the North Island hardly seemed complete without seeing 2 or 3 Piggy Packers vehicles zooming past.
Then the Global Financial Crisis hit..!
Suddenly, like now, lots of belt tightening. Piggy Packers sold half the fleet. The rest were upgraded.
In 2017, the current owners (Rod & Amanda), had just returned from Brisbane and were looking for a new business.
Piggy Packers was on the market – and they quickly purchased seven trucks and eight vans.
Their friends said, “Are you changing the name? What about the brand colour?”
With Piggy Packers’ distinctive green and oversize lettering, what could be more distinctive?
New vehicles were added. Another vehicle rental business was purchased in Levin, adding another ten cars, vans and trucks. Piggy Packers certainly was fattening up!
A site was found in Petone and up to ten vehicles were soon being hired out to Hutt Valley customers. By now the overall fleet was up to 50 vehicles!
Then, in 2020 COVID hit! New Zealand businesses pretty much ground to a halt….
Coming out of COVID, the best option seemed to downsize. Levin and Petone were absorbed back into the Porirua location.
Today, Piggy Packers still has cars, cargo and passenger vans and nice, big and small furniture trucks for hire. They can even supply a driver! With a small efficient team, they offer lots more customer service than most.
When the business was purchased, hiding in the warehouse was a very old, dusty “Piggy Bank” safe. Today, it has pride of place in the Piggy Packers office.
It is always stocked full of “GOLD BARS” (Peanut Slabs)!
Every customer gets to open the Piggy Packers safe and grab a couple for their road trip.

As of August 2024, Rod and Amanda have owned the business for seven years and have helped some 15,000 customers! They look forward to helping you too!
